What this test measures
A D-dimer test measures the amount of a specific protein fragment left behind in your blood when a blood clot dissolves. When you injure yourself, your body forms a mesh-like clot out of a protein called fibrin to stop the bleeding. Once the area heals, your body naturally breaks that clot down. The microscopic leftover pieces are called D-dimer fragments.
Under normal circumstances, you should have little to no D-dimer floating around in your bloodstream. However, if your body is actively forming and breaking down large or numerous blood clots, the amount of D-dimer can spike significantly.
Doctors primarily utilize this test in urgent care or emergency settings to help rule out serious, acute clotting conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or a pulmonary embolism (PE).

What keeps D-dimer low or normal?
A normal level simply reflects standard, healthy blood flow where clotting processes are kept in a safe equilibrium. However, it is vital to note that if you have been taking prescription blood thinners (anticoagulants), your D-dimer levels may appear normal even if you previously had or are treating a clot, as these medications actively slow down the clotting process.
